First you must determine the purpose of the fence. Will the fence be metal, chain link, plastic or wrought iron, etc.
If it is a wood fence you are building you also have to decide whether you will use treated or cedar wood, big posts or small posts and the height of the fence and so on.
There are many fence designs to choose from but some seem to be more popular. Also the same design of fence can have many variations to it.
The following pictures will help you choose a design and will show some variations on the same fence.
Panel fence with 1”x2” decorative slats. The posts are 6”x6” with 7½ x7½ wooden post caps.
Red cedar inlay fence with 4x4 posts and plastic fence caps.
Pressure treated inlay fence with 1”x6” boards, 6”x6” posts and copper fence caps. This fence was stained to a cedar color.
Pressure treated inlay fence same as previous picture but with 4”x4” boards and plastic caps, left in its natural wood state.
Pressure treated round fence with 1”x6” boards and 4”x4” posts. A plywood template was made and used for tracing shape. Stained to a salmon color.
Pressure treated wood. Fence boards are 1”x4”; the posts are 4”x4”, plastic caps and the top of the fence boards are beveled at 45 degrees for an elegant look. Angles are cut with a self made template.
Same fence design as above picture but the fence boards are 1”x6” and not beveled.
Pressure treated fence with 1”x4” boards, center stringer, 6”x6” posts and combination flat and round wooden caps. Fence was stained to match house.
Same fence design as above but with 1”x6” boards, 4”x4” posts and plastic fence post caps.
Imitation wrought iron look. Pressure treated 2”x2”wood, 6”x6” posts with arrowhead shaped wooden caps. Fence was painted a dark bronze color.
Pressure treated lattice top fence. This fence is seven plus feet in height and was built for privacy. For a different look the 2”x6” top board was cut at an angle and grooved to fit the lattice. If you wish to see more variations of lattice fence designs please click the link.
